Pookie Crack Cakes is a family-owned and Black-owned bakery in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood that has taken the city by storm . Founded by chef and owner Dedra Simmons, the bakery opened its brick-and-mortar location in July 2023 in the former space of the beloved Abundance Bakery . The business grew from a passion project Simmons started in 2014, baking from her home and selling out consistently, which eventually led to the demand for a storefront .
The bakery specializes in one thing: moist, premium mini loaf cakes, which are a take on the traditional Southern "crack cake" . True to its name, a crack cake is simply a bundt cake that forms cracks on top as it bakes; holes are then poked into the cake, and a butter rum glaze is poured over it, allowing the sweetness to seep deep inside . Simmons uses her own original cake recipes but honors her great-grandmother's legacy by using her praline glaze on the signature Butter Pecan Praline cake—the only flavor she made for the first four years of her business .
Today, customers line up before the 11 AM opening to get their hands on 500-600 cakes made fresh daily, which often sell out within hours . The menu typically features eight or more flavors, including Caramel, Red Velvet, Strawberry Lemonade, Chocolate Oreo Dream, and Key Lime, alongside rotating specialties like Peach Crack Cobbler and Pineapple Paradise available on specific days . Beyond the cakes, the shop is known for its community focus, promoting other Black-owned businesses and selling products like fresh lemonades and cookies from local entrepreneurs .
