Pen and Paper: A Joint Creative is a unique Black-owned community space in Chicago formed by the collaboration of two women-owned businesses, Da Book Joint and Stoviink Creatives. The partners had previously been tenants at the Boxville Market before joining together to open this brick-and-mortar location.
The space combines Da Book Joint's curated selection of books by Black writers featuring Black characters with Stoviink's line of home and wellness goods, including candles, lotions, perfumes, and aromatherapy products. The shop is designed to engage all the senses, with books displayed alongside soaps, sprays, and art pieces throughout the store. The owners describe the atmosphere as a space where "Black culture, community and creativity" come together, offering customers an escape from the outside world.
Beyond retail, Pen and Paper serves as a vibrant community hub. Da Book Joint continues to host book signings, book clubs, a "Books and Brunch" series, and kid-focused events from the shop. The owners also have plans to open a café, add another book club, and launch an open mic series, with future programming envisioned to include art events, literacy initiatives, wellness activities, and even community barbecues.
