Overflow Coffee is a Black-owned speciality coffee shop located in Chicago's South Loop neighbourhood, housed in the historic former headquarters of Vee-Jay Records—the largest Black-owned record label of the 1950s and 1960s. The building, where The Beatles' first U.S. record was issued and Chicago soul music was born, now serves as a mission-driven community space dedicated to fostering creativity, hope, and connection.
Founded in 2011 by Brandon and Amanda Neely, Overflow was acquired in 2018 by Entrenuity, a Black-owned non-profit organisation founded by L. Brian Jenkins that provides business development support to Black, Latino, and women entrepreneurs. The coffee shop serves craft coffee from two Chicago-based speciality roasters—Metric Coffee and Groundswell Coffee—alongside house-made custom syrups that create unique signature lattes. The menu also includes freshly baked pastries, quiche, sandwiches, and mocktails.
True to its historic roots, Overflow hosts live music programming, including the "Overflow After Dark" concert series and "Music to My Soul" events, supported by grants from the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. The space features nostalgic wall murals, original record memorabilia, and a spacious, welcoming atmosphere designed by architecture firm Gensler. Upstairs, Mox. E Coworking provides workspace for entrepreneurs, creating an ecosystem that continues the legacy of Black entrepreneurship that defined this location decades ago.
Overflow Coffee is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
