Honey & Hue Bookshop is a Black-owned and woman-owned independent bookshop located in Chicago's Beverly neighbourhood, opened in November 2025 by Chicago native Raven White and her daughters, Kennedy White and Kai Elbert. White previously owned Brown Sugar Café and Books in Katy, Texas, which she closed in 2024 after experiencing racist vandalism; she returned to her hometown to create a welcoming space focused on uplifting diverse voices.
The bookshop offers a general-interest selection spanning over 24 genres, including thriller, historical fiction, horror, romance, and science, making it accessible to readers of all tastes and ages. A key feature of Honey & Hue is its commitment to local independent authors—the store launched with approximately 50 Chicago-area indie authors showcased on its shelves alongside traditionally published bestsellers. The store specialises in literature highlighting Black, Indigenous, and people of colour experiences while ensuring there is something for everyone.
Beyond retail, Honey & Hue serves as a community cultural hub with programming for children, teens, and adults that incorporates books, art, and music. Planned events include Wellness Wednesday programmes (featuring sold-out R&B Yoga sessions), King Conversations—a mentorship programme pairing young men ages 14–24 with older mentors to discuss life skills—author signings, and literary cultural events. The bookshop has also launched a non-profit arm, the Honey and Hue Literacy Collective, which partners with area schools to make books more accessible to students and address low literacy rates by meeting young readers where their interests lie.
