Da Book Joint is a Black woman-owned independent bookshop founded in 2007 by Verlean Singletary on Chicago's South Side. Now co-owned by Singletary and her daughter Courtney Woods—who came up with the store's name as a middle schooler—the business has grown from an online shop into a beloved community institution dedicated to amplifying Black voices in literature.
The bookshop specialises in titles by African American authors featuring Black characters across genres, including fiction, history, children's literature, and coffee table books. With a mission to combat book deserts on Chicago's South Side, Da Book Joint serves as a welcoming space where readers of all ages can find books that reflect their experiences. The store offers a free book section to ensure no one leaves empty-handed.
Beyond retail, Da Book Joint is committed to youth literacy and community engagement through its non-profit arm, Options for Literacy. Signature programming includes the annual Community Book Fair with free books and school supplies, monthly Books and Brunch events for children, book club meetings for the Chicago chapter of NoName Book Club, and the ReadUp summer literacy programme that rewards K-12 students with free pizza for reading. The store also offers bookable experiences like Shop & Read sessions ($1) and Date Night sessions ($50).
Da Book Joint shares its South Shore space with Stoviink Creatives, a wellness and fragrance brand, as part of a collaborative partnership between four Black women entrepreneurs who joined forces to sustain their businesses and their community. In 2024, the store received a $7,200 donation from Chicago rapper Vic Mensa's cannabis brand 93 Boyz, covering a full year's rent and ensuring its doors remain open for the community.
