Cajun Cafe Chicago is a Black-owned and woman-owned catering company founded in 2022 by Executive Chef Lashon Burrell, a culinary school graduate who also holds an MBA. What began as an intimate dining experience during the pandemic grew into a full-service catering business operating out of The Hatchery Chicago, a food and beverage business incubator on the city's West Side.
The company specialises in high-quality, authentic Southern cuisine for corporate dining, galas, fundraisers, and special events. Menu highlights include Cajun Tuscan Cream Salmon, fried catfish with yellow stone grits, and Chef Burrell's signature Bayou Sauce—a sweet and spicy condiment that complements chicken, fish, and ribs. The catering experience emphasises not only flavourful food but also professional presentation and warm hospitality.
Beyond its culinary offerings, Cajun Cafe Chicago is deeply committed to community engagement and generational wealth on Chicago's West and South Sides. The company has partnered with organisations such as the Obama Foundation's Local Lunchbox programme (providing 52,000 meals to youth in 43 days), the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation, Dion's Chicago Dream, the YMCA, Catholic Charities, and Chicago Public Schools. Chef Burrell also mentors young people through on-the-job training opportunities, bringing youth to catering events to gain hands-on experience in the culinary industry.
The company has received support from Allies for Community Business (A4CB), including capital to purchase a delivery van and participation in the Neighbourhood Entrepreneurship Lab. Chef Burrell has been featured on the Brilliantly Black Podcast and in CBS Chicago coverage highlighting her community impact.
