AfriWare Books, Co. is a Black-owned, African-centred independent bookshop founded in 1993 by Nzingha Nommo, who left a career as an electrical engineer to pursue her passion for sharing Black history and culture through literature. For three decades, the bookshop served as a cultural anchor in Chicago's western suburbs, first in Oak Park and later in Maywood's Eisenhower Tower, before transitioning to a hybrid business model in October 2023.

The bookshop specialises in books that are culturally relevant to the Black experience—titles that Nommo credits with changing her own life—including fiction, history, children's literature, graphic novels, comics, and works by African American authors. AfriWare has long been more than just a retail space; it has functioned as a cultural centre hosting author visits, art events, drawing classes, book clubs, and community celebrations.

Following a community-driven GoFundMe campaign that raised over $17,000, Nommo pivoted the business to a sustainable hybrid model. AfriWare now operates primarily online, with a physical presence in Oak Park at 137 North Oak Park Avenue (Suite 207) for customer pickups and special events by appointment. The business has also focused on placing books into local school districts to ensure that students see themselves reflected in the literature they encounter.

AfriWare Books has had a satellite partnership with The AKIBA Bookshop at Trinity United Church of Christ (400 W. 95th St., Chicago) and continues to serve communities including Berkeley, Brookfield, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Hillside, Melrose Park, and River Forest, in addition to its global online customer base.
